My favorite outdoor activity?

What is my favorite outdoor activity you ask? Drinking on patios.  But honestly, I’ll partake in any activity that gets me outside when the weather is nice. But if there’s going to be a sparkling cocktail, like this Aperol Spritz, waiting for me when I get there, sign me up double!

The Aperol Spritz is the epitome of patio sipping.  It’s sweet, but not too sweet, sparkling, but not overly bubbly, and so refreshing. There’s a reason why it’s a classic – no one can say no! And if you haven’t jumped on the Spritz bandwagon, what are you waiting for?  Your journey to feeling like you’re on an Italian vacation is only a bottle of Aperol away.

The flavor is the perfect balance of sweet and bitter, and the effervescence of the bubbly prosecco can cool you off in an instant. Plus, the beautiful red color is pairs perfect with the season (and looks nice on Instagram).

Tips on Making the Best Aperol Spritz

During the height of staying at home in 2020, we went through a lot of Aperol Spritz’s at our house. Through our trial and error, I learned a few tips for making my favorite spritz:

  • Buy a nice Prossecco, but no need to go all out. Since you’ll be mixing the sparkling wine with other ingredients, you don’t need to go crazy, but definitely buy something you’d drink on it’s own.
  • Same goes for the sparkling water. If I’m making a cocktail, my top choice is Topo Chico, but you do you. If you would drink it on it’s own, it’ll be great in your drink.
  • The orange slice garnish is a must. Not only will it make you feel fancier, the smell of the citrus makes a huge difference in the drinking experience. It brightens the drink up and makes you feel like you’re on a beach in Italy.

The Recipe Details

This is the easiest, fancy cocktail I think you can make. It starts where many refreshing cocktails begin, with a glass of ice. No need to mix your drink separately, I find it easiest to do it all in the glass you’ll serve it in! Over the ice pour the Aperol and Prosecco, giving it a gentle stir to combine but not overly agitate the bubbles from the Prosseco.

Once mixed, add a splash of soda water and garnish with an orange slice. Give the cocktail one more stir before serving, add in a straw and get the patio sipping started!
