Tomato Summer

This fresh tomato salad of mixed tomatoes is the ultimate tomato summer dish. There’s something so satisfying about a plate of food that is really simple at it’s core, but is unbelievably delicious. The peak of tomato season should be celebrated by eating the tomatoes in the purest way. By using a simple vinaigrette, salt and pepper, and lots of summer basil, the sweetness of the ripe tomatoes get to shine.

A plate of this tomato salad is perfect to enjoy as a simple side for a weeknight dinner or a delicious side to impress guests at an al fresco summer dinner party. This recipe is best for the peak of summer when you can buy a variety of tomatoes at the market or your own tomato plants are producing more than you know what to do with.

Fresh Tomato Salad Recipe Tips

When you make this mixed tomato salad, here are a few tips to make sure it turns out delicious:

  • When buying olive oil look for a high quality olive oil at the store. To confirm an olive oil is high quality, look for 100% “first pressed” or “extra-virgin” olive oil on the label. Otherwise, the oil may be cut with a lower quality oil and the flavor could suffer.
  • To slice fresh basil like a pro, stack each of the basil leaves on top of each other. Roll the stack of basil into a tube and thinly slice the tube at the horizontal. This will give you nice threads of basil to use as garnish!
  • The most important tool when preparing this salad will be your knife. All of the “cooking” for this salad is slicing the tomatoes and basil! To make this process easier, look for a knife that’s sharp and has a serrated edge, to easily cut through the skin of the fruit. Some brands even sell specific tomato knives, like this one from Wusthoff
