Fig and Rum Cocktail

Fig and Rum Cocktail

A Farewell to Fig Season

This fig and rum cocktail is a simple, refreshing way to enjoy the end of fig season.  I already raved about my love of figs in my Baked Figs with Goat Cheese, Prosciutto, and Balsamic Glaze recipe, so I won’t go into that here, but I will say I’m sad to see the season go.  I saw a shelf of these deliciou fruit at the grocery store and knew I needed one last indulgence.  They weren’t quite right for baking, but sliced and added to a cocktail make for an earthy-scented drinking experience. To bring in the end of fall, I also burnt the end of a cinnamon stick which feels reminiscent of a bonfire, but much more confined to the small space of your kitchen (and it doesn’t leave your hair smelling like a campfire for weeks to come).  When drinking this cocktail, it feels subtly autumnal, through the smokey and earthy flavors of the garnish, but light and refreshing from the ginger beer and white rum.  It feels like walking down a tree-lined sidewalk, smelling the falling leaves and enjoying the crisp Fall air.

Recipe Details

This cocktail comprises a lot of things that I typically have on hand, and I’m hoping you do as well!  Fig jam and ginger beer seems to always be in my fridge this time of year, honey is a pantry staple, and a solid bottle of rum is always on the shelf.  It comes together quickly, mostly taking the time to stir the jam and honey into the rum. To begin, add the rum, fig jam, and honey to a glass and stir vigorously until the three ingredients feel homogenized.  My tip is to use local, high quality honey, the flavor will absolutely shine and bring in the smells of home. Once ready, strain the rum mixture into a glass filled with ice and top with your favorite ginger beer (I love Trader Joe’s brand). Top with a fresh fig slice and burn the end of a small cinnamon stick and carefully place at the top of the glass and enjoy!
