A “Cherry” Great Start to the Day

This berry cherry smoothie is the ultimate way to start your day or midafternoon treat. It’s full of sweet, tart cherry flavor, yummy berries, and nutty almond butter.

I go through phases where I can’t go a day without drinking a smoothie. I wake up so excited to whip up a cool refreshing beverage to go along with the rest of my breakfast. Lately, I’ve had the longest smoothie kick I’ve ever been on. It must be the pregnancy! Every morning I do a combination of different frozen fruits with a bit of fruit and yogurt to give myself a boost. Not only do I get a bit of extra nutrients from the fruit and milk, but I also start my day feeling so refreshed and ready to go. This cherry berry smoothie is a result of one of those mornings of experimenting. It's tart, sweet, nutty, and oh so good!

Cherry Smoothie Recipe Tips

When you make this cherry smoothie recipe, here are a few tips to make sure it turns out delicious:

  • A general rule of thumb when making any smoothie is that you want the liquid to just cover the solid ingredients. This will create the perfect consistency for your drink! If you’ve measured out your ingredients and realize the fruit isn’t covered, add an extra ¼ cup of water or milk.
  • Starting the blender off slow and cranking it up to high will always result in the perfect smoothie consistency. During the slow phase, it gives the smoothie an initial shake up to get the ingredients melded together. By the time it’s running on high, the fruit will get completely smoothed out and remove any chunks.
  • Some grocery stores have an excess of frozen mixed berry options in the freezer aisle. If you don’t have your own favorite blend already, I always recommend the “Fancy Berry Blend”. It’s a mix of raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. I think it’s the perfect amount of tart, berry flavor!

Start Your Berry Cherry Smoothie

To start this cherry smoothie, add the frozen cherries and frozen mixed berries to the pitcher of a blender. Add a tablespoon of whole milk greek yogurt and almond butter to the pitcher. Drizzle a bit of maple syrup or honey over the top.

Pour in a cup of milk of your choice and finish it off with a bit of water. The amount of liquid should just cover the fruit, so if it’s looking a bit full, reduce the amount of water. If the liquid looks like it’s not enough, add in an extra splash.

Blend and Serve

Blend the smoothie, starting on low and increasing the speed to high. By slowly increasing the speed, the smoothie does an initial mix at the lower speed. The higher speed then smooths out the beverage and ensures all of the big chunks of frozen fruit are blended.

Pour the smoothie into glasses and add a straw to enjoy.  This smoothie is best enjoyed immediately.
